ELEMENTARY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Purpose Statement:
The Elementary School Assistant Principal fosters a culture of learning, cultural responsiveness, and high expectations for every student and every adult. The Assistant Principal supports the building Principal in ensuring academic success of students, managing and supervising school site activities, and representing the school within the district and the community. Championing a vision that attends to the needs of all students, including historically underrepresented groups, the Assistant Principal supports all elements of the academic program, co-curricular program, physical plant management, and school community relationships. Along with the Principal, they ensure that student learning through the lens of equity and cultural relevance, drives all decisions and aligns with the vision of the District.
This job reports to, and is evaluated by, the Principal
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Oregon Administrative license or ability to obtain licensure.
- Master’s degree in Education or related field.
- A minimum of three (3) years of successful experience as an elementary school teacher.
- Demonstrated success in cultivating equity and inclusion in an educational setting.
- Exceptional coaching and mentoring skills.
- Strong curriculum, instructional, and assessment knowledge and skills.
- Experience with the implementation of evidence-based practices
- Excellent interpersonal relationship skills with diverse populations.
- Working knowledge of laws/policies pertaining to essential job functions.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

- Bilingual in Spanish/English or extensive experience with implementation of two-way immersion and/or dual immersion programming.

Essential Function
- Sustain and advance a commitment to District values, vision, and goals.
- Promote a coherent system of continuous learning and collaboration. Use qualitative and quantitative data to inform decisions and design choices in conjunction with all student programs, and teaching and learning efforts.
- Create an inclusive culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning for students and staff of all backgrounds.
- Support the development, implementation and evaluation of data-driven district and school programs for the purpose of enhancing student growth and achievement for all.
- Maintain the commitment to intentional Social Emotional Learning opportunities for students, and the building of student agency.
- Ensure all curriculum, instruction, and assessment efforts align to the district’s commitment to equity and are culturally responsive and relevant.
- Collaborate with district leaders to seamlessly integrate learning initiatives for all focal groups, including but not limited to implementation of the District Improvement Plan and Building-based Improvement Plans.
- Knowledge and strong experience in working with diverse populations, including emerging bilinguals, students receiving special education supports, and students in alternative settings.
- Maintain professional affiliations for the purpose of ongoing education in the latest developments in education.
- Help to supervise school safety programs; and coordinate required drills to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Cultivate and support an emotionally healthy and physically safe environment for all students and staff.
- Supervise the security and care of assigned equipment, buildings, grounds, and other school property.
- Supervise extracurricular activities.
- Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of district approved building curriculum for the purpose of ensuring academic success of students.
- Composes a wide variety of materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
- Evaluates assigned personnel (e.g. teachers, support staff) for the purpose of ensuring that standards are achieved and performance is maximized.
- Facilitates communication between personnel, students and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts.
- Facilitates meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of meeting curriculum guidelines and/or ensuring that state mandates are achieved.
- Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
- Manages a variety of school administrative functions (e.g. student disciplinary policy, school schedule, assigned personnel, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing school, district and state policy and maintaining safety and efficiency of school operations.
- Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Presents information for professional development, family/community engagement, or for management of the building.
- Supports principal for the purpose of providing assistance with administrative functions.
Other Functions Performs other duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the District.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; using pertinent software applications.
KNOWLEDGE is required to read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: district philosophy, curriculum, policies and procedures; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development; and understanding best practice supervisory principles/techniques
ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational policies to achieve organizational objectives; directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units; and helping to direct the use of budgeted funds within a work unit. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is routinely required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the Organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under a generally hazard-free environment.
Experience
A minimum of three (3) years teaching experience in an elementary school setting. Job related experience with an increase in level of responsibility is desired.
Education
Master’s Degree in a job-related area.
